Top 5 Tips for Driving Safe at Night
Even though car accidents occur, the chances that they occur are greater at night. Traffic death rates are three times greater at night than they are during the day.
There are more factors involved at night than during the day which makes night driving more dangerous. Possible factors can include, tiredness, fatigue and lack of visibility due to poor lighting, plus many others.
We may not be able to prevent car accidents from happening, but we can decrease the chances of them occurring by practicing smart night driving techniques. Here are some top tips you need to know:
1. Watch for Pedestrians
When driving at night, visibility is not as strong and can make driving harder. Walkers/runners sometimes don’t always wear safety gear which makes it hard to see them. Being vigilant about your surroundings and of possible pedestrians is important. You will be more aware and will be able to act accordingly in case there are pedestrians.
2. Increase Distance and Drive Slower
Keeping a safe distance from surrounding cars and avoiding tailgating will help you get to your destination safer. Follow speed limits and keep a 3-second gap between you and the next vehicle.
3. Make Sure to Be Seen
Sometimes highways or streets are not properly lit, so making sure that you are seen by other vehicles is imperative. While driving, make sure your lights are on, are working, and that you can use your turn signals. If you need to pull over for any reason, using hazard lights or reflective triangles will allow you to be seen by other cars.
4. Don’t Be Distracted
When driving, focusing on the road is the main objective. Whether you are texting, eating, changing the radio, or reaching for something, you are giving your attention somewhere else that is not the road. All it takes is less than 5 seconds (or less) to be distracted enough to cause a car accident. Prepare what you want or need before hitting the road.
5. Don’t Drink and Drive
If you have plans to drink, don’t drive. Have a designated driver that will get home safely. One decision to drink and drive can possibly result in you changing your life or another’s life forever.
